Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young left Sunday’s 13-6 win over the New York Jets early due to an ankle injury.

Young was spotted walking off the field and back to the locker room at MetLife Stadium during the third quarter on Sunday afternoon, though it wasn’t initially clear what Young had done. Pretty quickly, the Panthers announced that he was dealing with an ankle injury, which stemmed from an awkward sack on their previous drive. Young’s right ankle was actually stepped on as defensive tackle Jowon Briggs tried to bring him down.

The team initially called Young questionable to return. After Jaycee Horn came up with a huge interception in the end zone to stall a Jets drive late in the period, backup quarterback Andy Dalton came in to replace Young. The Panthers then ruled Young out midway through the fourth quarter.

Young had gone 15-of-25 for 138 yards with a touchdown when he went out. The former Alabama star entered Sunday’s matchup with 1,150 passing yards and 10 touchdowns to five interceptions this season, his third in the league.

Despite losing Young, Dalton held things down just long enough to pick up the seven-point win. Dalton went 3-of-6 for 27 yards, and Horn intercepted Tyrod Taylor a second time to help seal the win. Rico Dowdle had 79 yards on 17 carries for Carolina, and Xavier Legette had 59 yards and a touchdown on eight catches. The Panthers have now won three straight games, and sit at 4-3 on the year.

The Jets, meanwhile, are the lone team in the league without a win this season. They opted to bench starting quarterback Justin Fields for Taylor in the second half, too. Taylor went 10-of-22 for 126 yards with two interceptions. Breece Hall had 38 rushing yards on 11 carries, and Tyler Johnson had 60 yards on three catches.

The Panthers will host the Buffalo Bills next weekend. Further specifics on Young’s injury or his status for that contest are not yet known. If he can’t go, though, Dalton will likely get the nod once again.
