The New York Giants waived Jude McAtamney on Tuesday after the kicker missed two extra points in what ended up being a 33-32 loss to the Denver Broncos this weekend.
McAtamney missed his second extra point with less than a minute to play and the Broncos mounted a game-winning field goal drive on their ensuing possession.
McAtamney, from Ireland, has been on the Giants practice squad the last two seasons as an international exemption. But he’s been kicking this season since veteran Graham Gano ended up on injured reserve in Week 4. While the Giants signed Younghoe Koo to the practice squad, McAtamney was viewed as the better option after a practice competition with Koo and was elevated to the practice squad the following two games. He was signed to the 53-man roster ahead of the team’s Week 6 win over Philadelphia.
But McAtamney missed an extra point in that victory before he went on to miss the two crucial extra points Sunday in Denver.
It was the latest kicking misfortune to befall the franchise, which has struggled with kicker management questions over the last few years, as The Athletic’s Dan Duggan explored this week.
Now, the question is if the Giants will turn to Koo or if Gano will be ready to kick this week.
