Heading into this season, there were questions over whether Jaxon Smith-Njigba could replicate last year’s breakout 1,130-yard campaign with DK Metcalf no longer around to command attention from opposing defenses.

Smith-Njigba has made those questions look completely foolish.

Stacy Rost: Two keys for Seahawks to have a successful second half

The third-year Seattle Seahawks wideout has elevated his game to a whole new level this fall, hauling in 50 catches for a league-high 819 yards and four touchdowns through the first seven weeks of the season.

Here’s a closer look at the jaw-dropping numbers behind his torrid start.

• Smith-Njigba is on pace to finish with 1,989 receiving yards this season. That would break the NFL single-season record set by Detroit’s Calvin Johnson, who had 1,964 receiving yards in 2012. The caveat is that Johnson did that in a 16-game season. The NFL moved to a 17-game season in 2021.

• Smith-Njigba’s 819 receiving yards are tied for the eighth-most in NFL history through the first seven games of a season, according to Stathead. It shatters the previous franchise-best mark, which was held by DK Metcalf with 680 yards through the first seven games of 2020.

• Smith-Njigba’s 819 receiving yards are 190 more than any other receiver in the NFL this season. Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase is second in the league at 629 yards, followed by Los Angeles Rams wideout Puka Nacua at 616 yards and Dallas’ George Pickens at 607. Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown ranks fifth at 538 yards – a whopping 281 yards behind Smith-Njigba.

• Smith-Njigba is averaging an NFL-best 117 receiving yards per game. Over the course of an entire season, that would rank seventh in NFL history and fourth since the 1970 NFL merger. The NFL record is held by San Diego’s Wes Chandler, who averaged 129 receiving yards per game in 1982. The only other player averaging more than 90 receiving yards per game this season is Nacua at 102.7.

• Smith-Njigba has three straight games with at least 120 receiving yards and one touchdown catch. He’s just the 21st player in NFL history to achieve that feat. The NFL record is four straight games, which has been achieved four times.

• Smith-Njigba has five games this season with at least 100 receiving yards. No other player in the NFL has more than three 100-yard game this season. Smith-Njigba is already within one game of tying Steve Largent’s franchise record of six 100-yard receiving games in 1979.

• Smith-Njigba has an NFL-leading five receptions of 40-plus yards this season. That’s two more than any other receiver in the league.

• Smith-Njigba is averaging 11.7 yards per target, which is the most among all receivers with at least 30 targets.
