The Kansas City Chiefs‘ passing offense is firing on all cylinders as the reigning AFC champions head into Monday night’s Week 8 matchup against the Washington Commanders.
That being said, the Chiefs’ run game hasn’t been great to this point in the 2025 season.
Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the Chiefs’ second-leading rusher through the first seven games of the year. The 2025 NFL MVP candidate has been forced to use his legs more than usual due to a lack of production at the running back position.
Isiah Pacheco leads Kansas City in rushing with just 271 yards and one touchdowns. Kareem Hunt, who suffered a bone bruise on his knee this past Sunday, is the team’s third leading rusher with 205 yards and three touchdowns.
Seventh-round rookie Brashard Smith has 67 rushing yards and 122 receiving yards through his first seven professional appearances.

It’s abundantly clear that the Chiefs need help at the running back position. And with that in mind, the franchise could be targeting an RB weapon in the 2026 draft class.
In his most recent 2026 NFL mock draft, USA Today analyst Ayrton Ostly predicted the Chiefs will select Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with their first-round pick in the upcoming selection process.
“The Chiefs have the infrastructure and talent at key positions on both sides of the ball to simply take the best player available on the board and that’s certainly Love at this point,” Ostly wrote. “… Love is the clear-cut No. 1 running back in the class. He’s a true three-down player for Notre Dame with ideal contact balance paired with game-breaking speed. At 6-foot and 215 pounds, he’s built well to handle NFL contact and demands.”

Love is in the midst of yet another impressive college football campaign with the Fighting Irish.
Through his first seven games of the 2025 season, the 20-year-old running back already has 758 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. Last year, he had 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 6.9 yards per carry.
The Chiefs will kickoff against the Commanders at 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday.
