KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – After a season of nail-biting finish after nail-biting finish, the Kansas City Chiefs are back to winning with a little less doubt.
Each of Kansas City’s five wins this season have come in similar fashion, one that was largely unfamiliar to the Chiefs team of a year ago: a blowout. All five of the Chiefs’ wins have come by double-digits, with Monday night’s 28-7 thumping of the Washington Commanders pushing Kansas City past last season’s total.
And Monday night’s comfortable Chiefs win came despite a slow start and 7-7 tie at halftime.
“Luckily for us, our defense stepped up,” said quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 299 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win. “It’s a full team. The defense steps up whenever we’re struggling, and then we’re able to go out there and put up points in the second half and that speaks to the grit we have as a football team.”
A year ago, Kansas City won 11 regular-season games by a one-score margin. Whether it be by a game-winning field goal, a walk-off overtime touchdown, or remarkable defensive play, the Chiefs won on the final play frequently en route to a third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
“They compliment each other,” Reid said of his offensive and defensive units, which each rank in the top 10 of the league this season in total offense and total defense. “At this level, you need everybody.”

But this season, Kansas City has brought back the blowout. Through eight weeks, the Chiefs are already two double-digit wins shy of their most in a season during the Mahomes era.
Over a three-game streak of home games, Kansas City beat Detroit by 13, Las Vegas by 31 and Washington by 21 — aiding the Chiefs’ average margin of victory, which stands at 19.
“It shows the growth we’ve had as a team,” Mahomes said. “Offense, defense and special teams, I think we’re getting better and better each and every week. Even though we didn’t start the way we wanted to this week offensively, it showed that we can battle through adversity and still continue to play the brand of football that we want to play.”
Next week figures to bare a bit of a closer resemblance to the games of last year, as Kansas City prepares to travel on the road for an AFC Championship Game rematch against the Buffalo Bills.
After losses in each of their three one-score games this year, the newly-acquainted blowout Chiefs will hope to channel a bit of the 2024 magic next week.
