Cam Skattebo’s breakout rookie campaign has come to an early end.

The New York running back suffered a significant ankle injury and left the field on a cart Sunday during the Giants’ 38-20 defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was taken to a hospital in Philadelphia during the game for further evaluation.

The Giants announced that Skattebo underwent season-ending surgery Sunday night, via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. He has since been discharged from the hospital and will begin his rehabilitation process immediately.

Skattebo sustained the injury after a second-quarter pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart. His right leg got pinned underneath him and twisted on the ensuing hit. His lower leg awkwardly bent in the immediate aftermath of the play.

We’re not embedding video of the injury, which can be seen here. Players on the field immediately called for Skattebo to receive medical attention near midfield, and his teammates surrounded him on the field.

He was taken off the field shortly thereafter on the back of a cart. He waved to fans as he was carted off the field. The Giants ruled him out with an ankle injury before halftime.

Following Monday’s news of Skattebo’s season-ending surgery, the running back took to social media to thank his doctors, staff and the city of Philadelphia for taking care of him after the injury.

“Thank you everyone for the support!! Surgery went well. I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me. Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way,” Skattebo wrote. “Thank you to the doctors, surgeons, and staff that did their best work on me.

“This is just the beginning of my journey and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it!!!” Skattebo continued, ending with a “BRB.”

Skattebo had been a revelation for the Giants since they selected him in the fourth round of April’s NFL Draft out of Arizona State. An All-American at ASU, Skattebo made an immediate impact on New York’s offense and electrified the Giants fan base with his explosive style and nose for the end zone.

Entering Sunday, Skattebo had tallied 587 yards from scrimmage and six total touchdowns as a featured player in New York’s rookie backfield tandem alongside quarterback Jaxson Dart. He tallied 30 total yards and a receiving touchdown Sunday before his injury as the Eagles held a 14-7 lead.

Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. projects to see more touches in Skattebo’s absence.
