The San Francisco 49ers may be getting one of their big rivalry games out of the way early.
According to a report from KJR’s Dave “Softy” Mahler, the 49ers will open their 2025 schedule on the road against the Seattle Seahawks.
If Mahler is correct it would mark the first time since 2021 that San Francisco’s game in the Pacific Northwest didn’t fall on a Thursday night. It would also be the first time the 49ers opened a season against the Seahawks since 2011, and their first road season opener against Seattle since 2010.
The 49ers and Seahawks’ rivalry has been rekindled some over the last few seasons. They split their matchups last season with the 49ers winning in Seattle and the Seahawks winning in San Francisco. Prior to their Week 11 loss last season San Francisco had five-consecutive wins over their division rival. Seattle had won the previous four meetings before that.
Opening the season against the Seahawks and quarterback Sam Darnold would be a fun tone-setter for the 49ers’ season, but it would also be one eliminating one of their few easy travel road games. Outside of the division, San Francisco’s shortest road trip of the season is in Houston.
Overall, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is 7-9 against the Seahawks and 1-1 against their new head coach Mike Macdonald.
The 49ers’ full schedule will be officially released Wednesday at 5:00pm Pacific Time.
