Shedeur Sanders made a surprise return to Boulder during the Cleveland Browns’ bye week.
Sanders shared a video Saturday of him surprising Colorado head coach Deion Sanders with a visit.
The Browns (2-6) have a Week 9 bye ahead of a Nov. 9 road game against the New York Jets.
Sanders will be expected to back up Dillon Gabriel, who Kevin Stefanski said this week will start against the Jets.
Sanders spent two seasons playing with his father as head coach at Colorado, where he led the FBS with a 74 percent pass completion rate and paced the Big 12 with 37 passing touchdowns while leading the Buffaloes to a bowl game appearance in 2024.
The Browns then selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft, where he joined Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Gabriel in a four-way quarterback competition.
Cleveland ultimately traded Pickett to start the season behind Flacco. The franchise then benched and eventually traded Flacco as Gabriel took over ahead of Week 5.
Flacco’s trade to the Cincinnati Bengals led Sanders as the top backup option for the first time this season, although he still has yet to see any playing time.
Gabriel has led the Browns to a 1-3 record in his four starts, completing 59.9 percent of his passes for 702 passing yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. His receiving corps have meanwhile combined for 11 dropped passes in eight games.
Stefanski said the Browns would need to “look at everything” after suffering a 32-13 Week 8 loss to the New England Patriots last Sunday.
When asked if that could include a potential change at quarterback, Stefanski answered, “Every position, you have to look at. But let me say, with a young quarterback, you understand there’s going to be ups and downs.”
The result of the Week 10 matchup with the Jets could influence the likelihood Sanders will get a shot at playing down the stretch of the 2025 season.
Meanwhile, in Boulder, Deion has returned to Colorado after recovering from serious health issues including a cancer diagnosis that necessitated bladder removal. He said in July he has since been declared cancer-free.
The Buffaloes are off to a 3-5 start to their first season without Shedeur. It looks like the Browns quarterback will be in town for his former college team’s Saturday night matchup with visiting Arizona.
