One of the most underrated days on the NFL offseason calendar is the annual reveal of the upcoming schedule for the regular season. We already know who the opponents will be for the Houston Texans in 2025, and we know where each game will be played. However, learning the “when” for all of the 17 regular season games is exhilarating!
It’s particularly fun, because the Houston Texans are a good football team, which means there should be some prime time games to get amped up for, and we know there will be some road trips that the traveling Texans fans will want to plan for. This particular Texans schedule will feature multiple games in Los Angeles, as well as trips back to Kansas City and Baltimore, among other places.
Last year’s schedule was a massive change of pace, for a Texans organization that hadn’t played a Sunday or Monday night game in over five years, as the Texans played six games where they had the stage to themselves. I would expect that number to go down in 2025, only because the Texans were an unimpressive 2-4 in those six games.
All of that said, if I could make a plea to the scheduling gods, here are my four requests for the Texans’ schedule, in advance of tonight’s reveal:
No Christmas Day game this year, please
Last season, the Texans played on Christmas Day, as part of the first ever holiday doubleheader on Netflix. They hosted the Baltimore Ravens, and let’s just say that the halftime show by Beyonce was easily the best part of the day. The Texans put up their worst effort of the season, losing to Baltimore by a score of 31-2. It was an awful way to spend my favorite day of the year, and I don’t even want to be subjected to the possibility of holiday disappointment again.
Give us Cam Ward early in his rookie season, please
Cam Ward, of course, was the first overall selection in the NFL Draft a few weeks ago, having been selected by the hated Tennessee Titans. This means that we will see Ward twice a season, for as long as he is a Titan. Ward is a good player, but he’s a rookie, so if we’re going to play him (twice) this season, let’s get him early in the schedule, before he has his NFL “sea legs” underneath him.
Combine two of the West Coast trips into one long trip, if you could, thanks
I mentioned the two road games in Los Angeles above, and I’ll add in that there’s a road trip to Seattle on the docket, as well. That’s a lot of West Coast travel for a team based in the great state of Texas. My request to the league here would be that they take two of the games listed in this paragraph — either a Seattle and Los Angeles pairing, or a pairing of the two Los Angeles games — and put them in back to back weekends, so that the Texans can make a two game getaway out of it, and stay on the West Coast for a week in between the two games. I think traveling Texan fans would enjoy this, as well, especially if they get to spend a whole week in Los Angeles without changing cities!
Put the bye week at a normal juncture, pretty please!
Last season, the Texans’ bye week as in early December, in Week 14, which is absurd. I understand why they did it, as the league likely felt the Texans need a bye right before playing three games in 11 days, between December 15 and Christmas Day. However, playing 13 straight weeks without a break leading up to that is just silly. Plunk that bye week down around Week 8 or Week 9, please! None of this Week 14 garbage!
The schedule reveal takes place this evening at 7 o’clock local time, airing on both ESPN and the NFL Network.
