The San Francisco 49ers opened a huge Week 9 game vs. the New York Giants with a thud, but they bounced back in a big way.
New York opened the game with an easy touchdown drive to take a 7-0 lead, but after that the 49ers defense allowed 39 yards on 18 plays across five drives. San Francisco’s offense, meanwhile, scored a couple of touchdowns and got a field goal to go ahead 17-7. They turned it over late in the first half, but their defense held and the Giants missed a field goal to keep the 49ers ahead by 10 after two quarters.

A touchdown to open the third quarter would have given the 49ers full control of their Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants. They got as deep as the New York 11, but they went backward three yards on first down before a pair of incompletions by Mac Jones stalled the drive. Eddy Pineiro converted his 19th field goal in as many tries as a 49er and they took a 13-point lead with 9:55 to play in the third quarter.
Wow. San Francisco turned it over inside their own 30 just before the half, but the Giants couldn’t capitalize. New York ran for no gain on first down and then two incomplete passes led to a 45-yard field goal try that Giants kicker Graham Gano pulled wide left. The 49ers will get the ball to start the third quarter with a chance to take control of the game with a score to open the second half.
What a nightmare for the 49ers. They forced the Giants to punt after Pineiro’s field goal put the 49ers up 10. On their first play, Mac Jones was hit as he threw and the toss floated into the air where rookie DE Abdul Carter hauled it in for what was ruled a fumble recovery. The 49ers just needed to run out the clock to go into the half up 10, but instead the Giants get the ball inside the 49ers 30 with a chance to cut into the lead before halftime.
The 49ers pushed their lead to two scores with a long field goal from Pineiro who continues his perfect start with the 49ers. He’s now 18-for-18 overall, including six-for-six from beyond 50 yards. His low, line drive kick just snuck over the crossbar and put the 49ers ahead 17-7 with 1:59 to go in the first half.
The 49ers pass rush has had a tough time getting pressure on the quarterback the last few weeks, but recently-signed Clelin Ferrell made his presence known in his first game back with the club. On a second-and-7 he showed off his high motor and after getting pushed past the pocket, made his way back to hit Giants QB Jackson Dart from behind for a five-yard loss that put the Giants in a third-and-12. They eventually punted and San Francisco’s defense has bounced back in a big way after its tough start.
San Francisco’s offensive game plan against the Giants has worked to perfection to open Sunday’s game. They’ve racked up 153 yards on 20 plays with touchdowns on both of their drives. Their second series lasted eight plays. They travelled 80 yards and Mac Jones hit Jauan Jennings on a third-and-5 throw for an 11-yard touchdown to cap it. Jones has been excellent with completions on all 10 of his throws, but they’re mostly quick, easy throws designed to combat a very good Giants pass rush.
San Francisco stabilized after its rough defensive start to Sunday’s game. They got a score, then a three-and-out, and they closed the first quarter at New York’s 37 in the midst of a four-play, 43-yard drive. Christian McCaffrey had nine touches for 53 yards in the quarter, and Mac Jones was a perfect seven-for-seven for 59 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers evened Sunday’s game with a quick response after the Giants’ opening TD. They went 68 yards on 12 plays and capped the series with a Mac Jones touchdown pass to a wide open McCaffrey who slipped out of the backfield uncovered to walk in for his easiest score as a 49er. Jones went six-for-six for 47 yards and a touchdown. McCaffrey racked up seven touches for 33 yards and a score. It’s tied at 7 with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
San Francisco brought Spencer Burford off IR for Week 9 and he immediately stepped in as the starting left guard, a position rookie seventh-round pick Connor Colby held down since LG Ben Bartch went down in Week 2.
San Francisco’s defense was dreadful against the Houston Texans in Week 8, and that continued in Week 9 vs. the Giants. New York went 64 yards in 10 plays on their opening drive and only faced one third down. Giants TE Theo Johnson embarrassed 49ers CB Deommodore Lenoir en route to a 15-yard touchdown to cap the Giants’ opening series. The Giants lead 7-0 with 10:50 left in the first quarter.
