When a Hall of Fame finalist like Fred Taylor calls you a “unicorn,” the football world listens. The former Jacksonville Jaguars great didn’t hold back his praise for Travis Hunter, the electric two-way phenom from Colorado, who’s now at the center of one of the NFL Draft’s boldest moves.

Recently Taylor revealed he had been lobbying for the Jaguars to go after Hunter since the star sat down with him on The Pivot Podcast in December. “Even having Travis on our podcast… I told him to say, Duval, and he said it,” Taylor said. “I wasn’t sure we could actually make it happen.”

Jacksonville did more than just make it happen—they traded up in the 2025 NFL Draft to grab Hunter at No. 2 overall, betting big on a player who, according to Taylor, “can change the organization.”

At Colorado, Hunter made history as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner to go along with a slew of awards on both offense and defense. On offense Travis finished last season with 1,258 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns, while adding 35 tackles, 11 pass deflections, 4 interceptions and a forced fumble that gave Colorado a victory over Baylor.

But for Taylor, it’s not just the stats—it’s the attitude.

“If he makes a mistake or if it’s not perfect in his eyes, he gets up there and does it again,” Taylor noted, referencing Hunter’s relentless drive during Jaguars rookie camp. “That’s what you want in your rookies.”

Taylor credited the Jaguars’ revamped leadership—James Gladstone, Tony Boselli, and new head coach Liam Cohen—for the aggressive move. “It shows that they’re looking to win, looking to make a splash, and I’m all for it.”
