A big week for the NFL parity crowd.
With a handful of good teams losing in Week 9, the top half of the league remains bunched up, as 18 teams are separated by 2.5 games in the standings.
An electric shoot-out to close out Sunday morning’s slate led directly into an all-time rivalry matchup between two AFC juggernauts. And it all concluded with a blowout “Sunday Night Football” game that turned devastating.
Here is where the 49ers sit in the NFL Week 10 power rankings heading into “Monday Night Football” after their 34-24 win over the New York Giants:
32. Tennessee Titans (Last week: 32)
Record: 1-8
Cam Ward sack counter: 38 after being taken down four times on Sunday. He currently is on pace to be sacked 71 times this season, which would be the third-most in NFL history. Poor kid.
31. New Orleans Saints (Last week: 31)
Record: 1-8
The Saints should know by now that neither Spencer Rattler nor Tyler Shough are the guy, and if they secure the No. 1 pick, as they very well could, there should be no question which direction they go.
30. New York Jets (Last week: 30)
Record: 1-7
(Bye week; still lost)
29. New York Giants (Last week: 29)
Record: 2-7
Jaxson Dart still is electric, even without his star play-makers. His future is very bright, and it looks like they should have a top-five pick to continue building a nice roster for 2026.
28. Miami Dolphins (Last week: 26)
Record: 2-7
The fire sale should be underway momentarily. They axed their general manager and would be wise to make some trades before Tuesday’s deadline. Their season is over.
27. Cleveland Browns (Last week: 28)
Record: 2-6
(Bye week)
26. Las Vegas Raiders (Last week: 27)
Record: 2-6
Geno Smith still can sling it, even if it’s not always pretty. And in a loss. And it turns out, Brock Bowers still can catch it. It’s great to see him healthy again.
25. Cincinnati Bengals (Last week: 25)
Record: 3-6
Joe Flacco threw for 470 yards and four touchdowns (with two picks) and the Bengals’ offense put up 42 points. It’s not crazy to say that this would be a win for 31 other teams. Cincy’s defense is just THAT bad.
24. Arizona Cardinals (Last week: 23)
Record: 2-5
(Monday Night Football)
23. Atlanta Falcons (Last week: 20)
Record: 3-5
Drake London had one of the best games of his career and made one of the wildest catches this season, and the defense played well, but it just wasn’t enough to hold off the hottest team in football.
22. Washington Commanders (Last week: 19)
Record: 3-6
Sometimes there are injuries that really make you question why you enjoy watching this sport. The injury to Jayden Daniels is a perfect example. It’s safe to say everyone is gutted for one of the league’s brightest young stars.
21. Baltimore Ravens (Last week: 24)
Record: 3-5
Lamar Jackson is back, and so is Baltimore. And not a moment too soon. The defense still is a major liability, but they have the right guy to lead shoot-outs.
20. Houston Texans (Last week: 16)
Record: 3-5
Houston had a real chance at the upset before, and even after, C.J. Stroud left with a concussion. The good news for the Texans: Their defense was stellar yet again.
19. Dallas Cowboys (Last week: 18)
Record: 3-4-1
(Monday Night Football)
18. Minnesota Vikings (Last week: 21)
Record: 4-4
Minnesota’s offense looked much better in J.J. McCarthy’s return and its defense held the best offense in football at bay for a huge divisional win.
17. Carolina Panthers (Last week: 22)
Record: 5-4
Carolina’s recipe for success: Rico Dowdle and good defense. It carried them to a massive win over an elite team. I don’t know what this Panthers team is, but they’re at the very least frisky.
16. Chicago Bears (Last week: 17)
Record: 5-3
If you look at a team’s box score and see that four different players attempted a pass, would you have expected them to win a 47-42 shoot-out? No, of course not. That’s the Ben Johnson Effect. What a game.
15. Jacksonville Jaguars (Last week: 15)
Record: 5-3
Trevor Lawrence winning games late with his legs? Where have I seen this before? Someone will have to step up without Travis Hunter. Perhaps it’s Parker Washington?
14. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last week: 14)
Record: 5-3
After looking like hot garbage in recent weeks, Pittsburgh’s defense forced six turnovers on its way to a very impressive win over one of the best teams, and offenses, in the league. Was this a mirage?
13. San Francisco 49ers (Last week: 13)
Record: 6-3
A nice, convincing win against a bad team. They took care of business, but it’s not going to move the needle much. Make a move or two, get healthier and we’ll see if this team truly can hang down the stretch.
12. Los Angeles Chargers (Last week: 11)
Record: 6-3
There was a point in this game after Justin Herbert threw a pick-six and Tennessee returned a punt for a touchdown where it looked like things could go horribly south for Los Angeles. Herbert then took matters into his own hands.
11. Green Bay Packers (Last week: 5)
Record: 5-2-1
Jordan Love and Co. moved the ball well, but one too many turnovers cost them in a low-scoring affair against an inferior opponent after arguably their best win of the season. Two steps forward, one step back.
10. Seattle Seahawks (Last week: 12)
Record: 6-2
Imagine telling someone three or four years ago that Sam Darnold would be playing like an MVP in consecutive seasons. He is such a great system quarterback, and by no means is that a bad thing. He’s no longer a career stop-gap guy, Seattle has found its quarterback for the near future.
9. Kansas City Chiefs (Last week: 7)
Record: 5-4
They might have lost the battle, but if Patrick Mahomes faces off against Buffalo again in the playoffs, he will make sure to once again win the war. No need to hit the panic button here.
8. Los Angeles Rams (Last week: 10)
Record: 6-2
Los Angeles’ offense is firing on all cylinders, and when it is, there isn’t a team in the NFL the Rams can’t beat. Matthew Stafford quietly (?) is having an MVP season.
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last week: 4)
Record: 6-2
(Bye week)
6. Detroit Lions (Last week: 3)
Record: 5-3
A very quiet day for Detroit’s dynamic running back duo. If there’s one way to slow down the Lions’ offense, it’s stopping David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs and letting Jared Goff beat you. Sometimes he will. Just not on Sunday.
5. Denver Broncos (Last week: 8)
Record: 7-2
It’s not about how you start, but how you finish. And nobody’s been closing out games better recently after slow starts than Bo Nix, whose Broncos are tied for the best record in football.
4. Indianapolis Colts (Last week: 1)
Record: 7-2
Daniel Jones came crashing back down to Earth with FIVE turnovers. As ugly as his performance was, I still believe this is a good team. However, the honeymoon phase is over.
3. New England Patriots (Last week: 9)
Record: 7-2
Drake Maye continued to drop dimes and remained the most consistent quarterback in football. He has the third-longest streak of games (8) with 200-plus yards and a 100-plus QBR in NFL history behind Aaron Rodgers (12) and, of course, Tom Brady (9).
2. Buffalo Bills (Last week: 6)
Record: 6-2
There goes that man. And no, I’m not talking about Josh Allen. Although, he was excellent. James Cook is everything to this offense. Buffalo has won five consecutive regular-season games vs. Kansas City. Notice how I said ‘regular season’?
1. Philadelphia Eagles (Last week: 2)
Record: 6-2
(Bye week)
