Key Points:
The Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Buffalo Bills 28-21, snapping a three-game winning streak.
Mahomes had a historically poor performance, completing less than 50% of passes.
The Chiefs have a worrying trend in close games this season.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs lost another close game on Sunday, as they suffered defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills, 28-21. This put an end to the Chiefs’ three-game winning streak, with Josh Allen and Co. handing Kansas City its fourth loss of the season. The Chiefs are now 5-4 after Sunday’s defeat, falling to third in the AFC West behind the 7-2 Denver Broncos and the 6-3 Los Angeles Chargers.

The Bills, on the other hand, improved to 6-2 after their big win. They also got some revenge over the Chiefs from last season’s heartbreaking loss in the AFC Championship Game.

It was a forgettable performance for Mahomes, who finished with 15-of-34 completed passes for 250 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. It was a historically bad outing for the two-time All-Pro quarterback, who, for the first time in his career, completed less than 50% of his passes in the game.

The Chiefs kept this one close for pretty much the entire contest. Despite going down 28-13 late in the third quarter, Mahomes and Co. were able to rally back and cut down the lead to 28-21 early in the fourth. The Bills held on, though, and were able to escape with a hard-fought victory.
This was far from the only close game the Chiefs have lost this season. As a matter of fact, they have already been involved in four contests that have been decided by a single score. The Chiefs lost all four.
NFL analyst Sheil Kapadia of The Ringer pointed out this concerning trend for Mahomes and Co. this season. The fact that the Chiefs have gone 0-4 in one-score contests speaks volumes about their inability to find success in close games. This development becomes even more worrying considering how Kansas City went 10-0 in one-score games last season.

Reporter Josh Dubow of the Associated Press also added that the Chiefs are 17-8 in their last 25 one-score games. They lost four straight, won 17 in a row, and have now lost four consecutive games again.
Mahomes and the Chiefs will need to sit on this record for the next couple of weeks. They get their bye in Week 10 and are not due for action until Nov. 16.
Up next for Kansas City is a road game against the Denver Broncos in Week 11. The game at Empower Field at Mile High will kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET.
