What did the New Orleans Saints get from the Los Angeles Chargers in their buzzer-beating Trevor Penning trade, and what do their future draft picks look like after the NFL trade deadline? Let’s dig in. First off, NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill was the first to report that the Saints received a 2027 sixth-round pick for Penning. That’s probably what they could have expected in terms of a compensatory draft pick had Penning signed elsewhere as a 2026 free agent. Locking that pick in now, rather than playing the comp game and hoping it works out in your favor, isn’t a bad idea.
It just doesn’t do a lot to help right now. But nothing does — after all, the next draft is more than six months away. The Saints are embracing a yearslong rebuild and it’ll take time to get the right players in the right positions. That’s something we just witnessed with Penning’s struggles at left tackle, right tackle, and eventually left guard.
But let’s shift gears and look at the Saints’ new stockpile. After dealing Penning to the Chargers and sending wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, here are their draft picks in each of the next three years:

Additionally, the expectation is that the Saints will get a compensatory fourth rounder if cornerback Isaac Yiadom plays less than 35% of defensive snaps this year. He’s currently at 140 of 568 (24.6%).
