High school football playoffs to begin Friday for Pine Belt-area teams

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – The high school football postseason begins this weekend in Mississippi, and the Pine Belt area will be well-represented.

Teams in four of the seven Mississippi High School Activities Association classifications line up Friday night for the first round of the state playoffs.

Twenty-three of the 24 teams designated Class 1A through Class 4A in the Pine Belt area earned spots in the postseason field after finishing among the top four in their respective regions.

Six high schools won regional titles to earn No. 1 seeds, including

Columbia High School (10-0)Raleigh (9-1)Heidelberg (8-2)West Marion (7-3)Taylorsville (6-4)East Marion (5-4).

Class 5A through Class 7A schools will wrap up their regular-season schedules Thursday night. The playoffs for those three classes open on Friday, Nov. 14.

First-round playoff games for teams under the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools banner also are scheduled to begin Friday.

Two Pine Belt-area teams will play in the MAIS Class 3A postseason, with Wayne Academy visiting Riverfield Academy in Rayville, Louisiana, Friday night.

Columbia Academy earned a first-round bye.
