Ahead of the NFL trade deadline, the New York Jets made an intriguing move, sending cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-rounder.

A 2022 second-round pick out of Alabama, Metchie has yet to establish himself as a reliable pass-catcher in the NFL. However, the 25-year-old wideout will now have an opportunity to carve out a role and prove himself in New York.

Speaking to reporters for the first time as a Jet, the Alabama product was asked if he sees this trade as a chance for him to make his mark in the Big Apple.

“I think it’s always an opportunity. Whichever team, wherever you are, I think it’s always an opportunity, and I think it’s just a matter of how you handle business,” said Metchie. “Really look to make an impact on whatever team you’re on, whether it’s a really good team or whatever you want to call it, but I think it’s about the individual and how you go about your business.”

John Metchie was asked if he sees this as a chance for him to make his mark with the Jets:

It’s been anything but a smooth ride for Metchie since entering the NFL. His NFL career was derailed before it even began when he was unfortunately diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 2022.

After spending his rookie year focusing on recovery, Metchie returned to the field the following season only to find himself buried on the depth chart in Houston’s stacked wide receiver room. The story was similar in Philadelphia, where he landed in a preseason trade but couldn’t crack the rotation behind stars like A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

The Taiwan native has totaled 44 receptions for 430 yards and one touchdown across 36 career NFL games.

Now, with a fresh start in New York, Metchie finally has what he’s been waiting for: a real chance to earn snaps and prove his value.
