We’re on the Week 10, and the New Orleans Saints (1-8) are gearing up to prove they didn’t take as many steps back at the NFL trade deadline as the prognosticators think. At the same time, they’ve got a lot of work to do in wining back support from their fanbase. Losing 20 of their last 24 games will put anybody in a tight spot.
And the division-rival Carolina Panthers (5-4) are eager to keep the Saints in the basement. This NFC South grudge match could give New Orleans some confidence going into the bye week or put them one step closer towards locking up a top pick in the 2026 NFL draft. We may be in for a little addition by subtraction from the Saints’ moves at the trade deadline. They didn’t run the ball as well after Trevor Penning replaced Dillon Radunz in the lineup, and while losing Rashid Shaheed is by no doubt a step back, it does give Devaughn Vele an opportunity to draw more targets. Good things have happened when he’s caught the ball — he’s converted four first downs and scored a touchdown on five receptions. Tyler Shough needs to do what he can with the protection in front of him and do a better job getting the ball to his playmakers (such as they are). Defensively, this is a matchup the Saints could win (really!). Bryce Young and his supporting cast are nothing special. If New Orleans can just be average against the run and not get gashed, they can beat him. They’ve done it before. Bold prediction: Tyler Shough leaves with more touchdowns than turnovers for the first time this season. — John Sigler
