DETROIT – Detroit Lions superstar offensive lineman Penei Sewell returned to the game Sunday after he went down with an injury against the Washington Commanders.
Sewell, who is considered one of the best players in the NFL, stayed down on the field after a David Montgomery run with about five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The 25-year-old right tackle was surrounded by athletic trainers. He walked off the field under his own power and went into the medical tent. He came out with his left knee taped.
The Lions ultimately scored a touchdown on a Jared Goff pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Sewell didn’t return to the field during the drive, but he did celebrate the touchdown with his teammates.
Sewell was back on the field to start the next offensive possession following a Commanders punt.
Sewell has started all 75 games for the Lions since they drafted him No. 7 overall in 2021. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler and the most reliable presence on an offensive line that’s struggled for parts of this season.
