Despite Colts placekicker Michael Badgley’s pair of misses Sunday against the Falcons – his second missed extra-point in five starts in 2025 and a missed 53-yard field goal that was on-line but notably short – his roster spot appears to be safe as Indianapolis enters its bye week.
Asked Monday whether the team had plans to evaluate the kicker position as it enters one of the toughest back-half schedules in the NFL, Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters there are no plans for a change.
“Not right now, no,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of faith in (Badgley). Obviously, he kicked that game-tying field goal (a 44-yarder with 25 seconds left in regulation).
“Obvious, you want to have those other ones back, but that’s all part of football.”
The Colts already held a high-pressure, eight-kicker tryout five weeks ago, won by Badgley, the journeyman placekicker who’s started in NFL games for five different teams in seven seasons and popped up on several more practice squads and training camps.
The Colts front office opted to cut veteran Matt Gay two years into a four-year deal in April in favor of second-year kicker Spencer Shrader, the strong-legged Indiana-native who starred in his final year of college at Notre Dame in 2023.
Through five games, Shrader was leading the league in points making 13-for-14 on field goals and all 14 extra points. His only miss in his second year in the league came from beyond 50 yards in a blowout 41-20 win over the Titans.
But Shrader tore two ligaments in his kicking leg during the Colts’ Week 5 blowout win over the Raiders when safety Tristin McCollum ran into him during the end of an extra-point try. In came Badgley, who won out in a crowded tryout that included league veterans Matt Ammendola, Dustin Hopkins and Josh Lambo, and who had spent two previous stints in Indianapolis – one during training camp in 2018 and another as an injury fill-in for Rodrigo Blankenship in 2021.
Badgley was out of the NFL in 2024 with a torn hamstring suffered in July of that year, coming in the wake of a promising end to the 2023 season with the Detroit Lions: 7-for-7 on field goals and 24-for-26 on extra points.
Badgley’s career began with that training camp stint in Indianapolis, followed by three years with the Chargers (2018-20) and then 2021 and 2022 where he kicked for four different teams across 26 regular season games. The 30-year-old was signed to three different rosters in 2023 – the Commanders in training camp, a cup of coffee in Tennessee and then the end-of-season stint in Detroit – but is yet to find long-term traction anywhere.
Over his career, Badgley has missed just two field goal attempts inside 40 yards (one each from 20-29 and 30-39 yards), but he’s struggled from deep, going 40-for-51 between 40 and 49 yards and 7-for-16 from 50 and beyond. He’s a career 95.3% on extra-points, having missed a pair this year (Sunday against the Falcons and last month against the Chargers) and two more in 2023 with Detroit.
Since Adam Vinatieri retired after the 2019 season, the Colts have started five separate kickers in an attempt to find long-term stability at the position: Badgley, Shrader, Gay, Blankenship and Chase McLaughlin.
Gay landed this year in a starting role with the Washington Commanders and is currently 21-for-21 on extra points and 11-for-15 on field goals – including 4-of-7 from 50-plus yards. McLaughlin has found a long-term home with the Buccaneers, where he’s 105-for-108 on extra points and 77-for-85 on field goals – including 23-for-26 from 50 and beyond.
