A Salinas High School athlete will be heading to the Super Bowl as part of the third annual NFL Latino Youth Honors.Flag football standout wide receiver Alissa Escutia was selected by the 49ers for her work on the field and in the classroom. She was named one of eight finalists for the award.Escutia was told she was a finalist at Levi’s Stadium. 49ers offensive tackle Isaac Alarcón presented Escutia with her Super Bowl LX ticket.Escutia said she grew up in Sacramento and recently moved to Monterey County. She said her new community is made up mostly of Latinos, and being close to them has given her more insight into her culture.Escutia said winning the award would be big for her and her family—it would give her a way to give back to them.She said, “Football is seen as a men’s sport, but I feel girls also want to try it and play it.”Each NFL team selects one male and one female high school senior for the program each year. The field of 62 is narrowed down to eight finalists who get to attend the Super Bowl.A male and a female winner are selected, and they each earn a $25,000 scholarship; the other six finalists receive a $5,000 scholarship.Each finalist will also have the chance to participate in various special events in San Francisco during the week of Super Bowl LX.The other representative selected by the 49ers was Lawrence “Larry” Bettencourt, who played for Gonzales High School. He was not selected in the top eight.
