The Denver Broncos currently sit at 8-2 and at the top of the AFC West, but it doesn’t mean fans won’t look down the road at the NFL draft for 2026. USA TODAY recently released a way-too-early 2026 NFL mock draft, and writer Ayrton Ostly thinks the Broncos should draft Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer.
Mateer has shown signs of being a dual-threat quarterback, leading the Oklahoma Sooners to a 7-2 record as they chase a playoff bid. He’s totaled over 2,200 yards of total offense, but has only thrown eight touchdowns to seven interceptions. Here’s the big question: Will coach Sean Payton take a flier on a quarterback who has had an injury while completing only 64% of his passes?
“Mateer had first-round potential to start the season before suffering a hand injury,” Ostly wrote for USAT. “He’s been spotty since returning from that injury in a matter of weeks and should improve as the season wears on. At his best, Mateer has solid mobility, good processing and a strong arm that operates out of multiple angles. Outside of quarterback, Denver has one of the best rosters in the NFL. They need an upgrade at the position to maximize it.”
While Bo Nix is currently the starting QB, some pundits have wondered if Payton will seek a new starting quarterback during the offseason. With seven games remaining this season, it’s probably too early to entertain that conversation in earnest, but it could be a storyline to monitor in 2026 if Nix does not finish the year on a strong note.
