The Washington Commanders could be getting some help along their injury-plagued defensive line soon. On Thursday, the Commanders revealed they’d opened the 21-day window for defensive end Drake Jackson.

Jackson, 24, signed with Washington last month and was immediately placed on injured reserve. The 2022 second-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers was injured in 2023 and missed all of 2024 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Patellar tendon. Washington general manager Adam Peters was San Francisco’s assistant GM when the 49ers selected Jackson out of USC.

Since being drafted, Jackson has appeared in 23 career NFL games, recording 21 tackles, including five for loss, nine quarterback hits, nine pass breakups and six sacks. The 6-foot-4, 273-pound Jackson could not only provide a boost this season for the Commanders, but could play himself into Washington’s future plans.

The Commanders have lost Deatrich Wise, Dorance Armstrong and Javontae Jean-Baptiste for the season with injuries. Armstrong led Washington in sacks at the time of his injury, and the Commanders have struggled to pressure opposing passers since his Week 7 injury.

The Commanders are currently in Madrid, Spain, where they’ll face the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Jackson traveled with the team to Madrid. With Washington opening his practice window, he would appear to be close to a return.
