MINNEAPOLIS — Imagine Jordan Love throwing the game-winning pass to secure a gold medal for Team USA. It’s not as crazy of an idea as it sounds.

Among the many resolutions that will be considered by NFL team owners at the annual Spring League Meeting next week in Minneapolis is whether to allow players to participate in flag football at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

The resolution would allow one player per team to compete, with each team’s designated international player being allowed to play for his respective country.

Teams would also receive injury protection and salary cap credit for players injured during flag football activities related to the 2028 games, and Olympic teams would agree to minimum standards for medical staff and field surfaces.

The NFL was a major part of the push to include flag football in the upcoming games. It’s one of several new sports that will feature in LA including cricket, lacrosse sixes and squash. Host countries typically have increased sway with the IOC to add events for their games. For example, the Paris 2024 games saw the Olympic debut of breakdancing.

This year’s Spring League Meeting is scheduled for May 20-21.
