The 2025 Texas high school state football playoffs began Thursday with a smattering of local games and continued with a bang Friday, highlighted by a dramatic bi-district matchup between two Central Texas powers: Westlake, which was a Class 6A Division I state finalist last season, and Vandegrift, the defending Class 6A Division II state champion.
The Vandegrift Vipers won it. By a foot. Literally.

A last-second field goal gave Vandegrift the 16-14 bi-district victory. Other winners Friday included Lake Travis, Hutto, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Pflugerville and Weiss. Dripping Springs and Liberty Hill were among Thursday’s opening winners. And the bi-district round concludes for Central Texas on Saturday with an Anderson vs. Friendswood tilt at House Park.

Vandegrift walk-off win
Vandegrift hits a 37-yard field goal to beat Westlake, 16-14, at the buzzer. The Vipers move on to face the winner of Brandeis and Sotomayor.
This is the first four-loss Chaps season since 2014, which was also their last year without a playoff win. That year, they lost by the same score, 16-14, but to Round Rock.

Lake Travis advances and other scores
Lake Travis closed out Round Rock 41-14 and will play in Seguin next week, opponent yet to be decided.Â
In 5A-DI, East View is out after falling to Midlothian, 36-16. Georgetown, meanwhile, is about to close out Centennial and leads 42-11 in the fourth quarter. Cedar Park has also fought back and now leads Tyler, 43-36, in the fourth.Â
In 4A-DII, Wimberley is through with a resounding win over Carrizo Springs, 59-0.Â

Weiss claws back
After trailing by 21 at halftime, Weiss has stormed back in the second half and is now tied at 35 against La Porte in the fourth quarter. The winner moves on to play Lufkin or Westbury, which will be played on Saturday.

Lake Travis senior quarterback Luke McBride has five passing touchdowns midway through the third quarter. His most recent, a 19-yarder to Jason Carter, put the Cavaliers up 38-7 as they cruise toward a second-round matchup against the winner of Brennan and Reagan, which Brennan leads 35-14 at halftime.
