Watch: Eugene’s Patrick Herbert and Bryce Boettcher on their high school rivalry

South Eugene’s Bryce Boettcher and Sheldon’s Patrick Herbert discuss their high school rivalries before playing together for the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl.

Though it isn’t yet certain if the younger Patrick Herbert will suit up or see the field this weekend, he and his Jacksonville Jaguars will host his older brother Justin and the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday, Nov. 16 at EverBank Stadium for the first time as professionals.

The Eugene natives and former Oregon Ducks could have the rare opportunity to step on the same field as professionals if Patrick is elevated from the practice squad this week, however unlikely. Patrick, an undrafted rookie tight end who spent six years as a Duck, has been on the practice squad all season for the Jaguars.

Justin, a six-year NFL veteran quarterback for the Chargers, has thrown for 2,610 yards and 19 touchdowns this season in 10 games.

In an interview with reporters this week, Patrick said he hasn’t played against Justin “in years.”

“It’s awesome,” Patrick said. “I think we kind of take it for granted sometimes looking at him and being like, ‘oh, he’s been in the league for five or six years, whatever.’ And I think it’s a big accomplishment. That’s really cool.”

The pair grew up through the youth ranks in Eugene as three-sport athletes on the same team for almost their entire careers, each starring at Sheldon High.

Justin was a four-year starter at QB for the Ducks from 2016-19, throwing for 10,541 yards and 95 touchdowns. He was drafted sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Chargers.

Patrick played for the Ducks for six seasons, battling injuries for the majority of his college career from 2019-2024. He caught 31 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns over his career before going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft and signing with the Jaguars.

“He’s there when I need it,” Patrick said. “If I have questions for him, he’s always there. But besides that, I think it’s kind of my journey.”
