Jaguars coach Liam Coen says anger fueled victory over Chargers
Jaguars coach Liam Coen discusses how an angered Jaguars team is the version that plays best, and it showed in a rout of the Chargers.
The Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 35-6 after a significant loss the previous week.Head coach Liam Coen stated the team played “pissed off” and set a new standard for the rest of the season. The Jaguars’ offense rushed for 192 yards and the team was only flagged for one penalty during the game.
The Jacksonville Jaguars found their edge in Sunday’s 35-6 win against the Los Angeles Chargers from EverBank Stadium.
On the heels of the largest blown lead in team history, the Jaguars responded with an impressive dismantling of a Chargers team who was viewed as one of the best in the NFL.
All it took was the team playing “pissed off” as head coach Liam Coen explained during his postgame press conference after the win. On Monday, he expounded on how he thought the team responded to the loss in Houston.
“We now owe it to each other to play that way for the rest of the year,” Coen said during a Monday video call with reporters. “That’s got to be our mindset as a team. We owe it to each other now to put that on tape as much as possible for the remainder of the season and let the results be what they may.”
The team was able to rush for the second-most yard this season, scampering for 192 yards as a team. And they were only flagged once in the entire contest, something they’ve been working to eliminate throughout the season.
It’s a good recipe to winning games for the Jaguars moving forward.
Let’s take a look at what Coen had to say about the victory during his Monday press conference:
Liam Coen explains rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten’s big game:
We ran it 47 times, so you’re just naturally not trying to put too much on one guy one way or the other. So I thought Tuten ran hard, he ran downhill, couple third down runs, got us vertical. He did a really nice job and then obviously so did [Travis Etienne Jr.] and [RB LeQuint Allen Jr.], but Tuten has been practicing better and better and as much as we can continue to get him involved the better our offense is.”
Liam Coen on keeping the team playing at the standard they set vs. the Chargers:
“You want to be able to see that kind of level of execution and passion and energy every week. That’s the standard. That’s the opportunity we have. And that’s the challenge though of coaching and playing in the NFL is doing it week in and week out.”
Liam Coen speaks about rookies Danny Striggow and BJ Green getting the opportunity to play vs. the Los Angeles Chargers:
“It’s the epitome of what you want your team to be, is guys earning the right through via special teams, playing their asses off on special teams, doing their job in practice, doing their job every day, earning the opportunities on special teams, playing well, and then an earning opportunity to impact the game on Sundays on offense or defense. That’s it. That’s what it should be. That’s how it has to be and that’s how you earn time here.”
Liam Coen talks about winning without key starters playing and what the message will be to those starters when they return:
“I think they saw a team that they obviously want to be associated with, they want to be involved in, they want to go help make plays for and do it for four quarters. And ultimately, that message is going to continue to be sent throughout the locker room and spread throughout this building is that, ‘Hey man, we’ve got to play pissed off and efficient and execute like that for four quarters.’ Everybody, that’s the standard. And ultimately if you’re not able to do that, then hey, that’s the case. It is what it is, but everybody I think wants to be involved and as much as those guys do as well.”
