WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The head football coach for Laney High School has announced his resignation after having assumed the position back in June.
Steve Brooks announced the step down in a post to X on Monday, citing difficulties with balancing his commutes in and out of Wilmington.
“I made the tough decision today to step down as the head coach at Laney,” wrote Brooks in the social media post. ” I thought I could balance being away from family during the week and coaching while still being a dad and leader of our family!! I could not and it was not fair to our players or coaches to be spending so much time going back and forth to Greenville and Greensboro and not being in Wilmington!!”
Brookes has nearly three decades of coaching experience, having previously spent three years as an offensive coordinator at Jacksonville and was head coach for nine years at C.B. Aycock in Goldsboro prior to assuming his position at Laney High School.
“I have great players and a great staff and I’ll always be thankful for all they did,” wrote Brooks in the post. “I will always be a huge fan of Buctown and all that Laney has done for my family and I!!”
