Linebacker Tatum Bethune and kicker Eddy Piñeiro will be out indefinitely after sustaining injuries in the 49ers’ 41-22 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at State Farm Stadium.
Bethune sustained a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss multiple weeks with the injury, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday via conference call.
Bethune will probably not be placed on injured reserve, as the 49ers have their bye week coming up after two more games, Shanahan added.
Piñeiro sustained a Grade 1 right hamstring strain and is listed as “week to week,” Shanahan said, sharing that the 49ers plan to bring in kickers either Tuesday or Wednesday to audition for the temporary opening.
Shanahan said he did not know whether former Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker is among those being considered.
Tucker, 35, who ranks fourth in NFL history with an 89.1-percent accuracy on field goals, had his NFL suspension lifted last week.
He was suspended 10 games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Several massage therapists in the Baltimore area accused Tucker of sexual misconduct.
Matt Gay, 31, also could be on the 49ers’ list after the Washington Commanders released him Monday. Gay was just 13 of 19 this season with Washington while making all 22 of his extra points.
Greg Joseph, whom the 49ers signed in the offseason to compete with Jake Moody, remains a free agent. The 49ers opened the season with Moody, who currently is on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad.
Piñeiro ranks third in NFL history with an 89.9-percent accuracy clip. He is 22-for-22 with the 49ers since signing after Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season. He is 18 of 22 on extra-point attempts.
The 49ers will go further down their depth chart to fill a hole in the middle of their defense.
The 49ers expect Curtis Robinson to take over at middle linebacker in place of Bethune, who got his chance due to Fred Warner’s season-ending injury.
Robinson had 11 tackles in the 49ers’ victory against the Cardinals. Jalen Graham is likely to be in uniform as a backup from the 49ers’ practice squad while Bethune is out of action.
Also, defensive end Robert Beal Jr. sustained a concussion on Sunday and is in the NFL’s return-to-play protocol.
