PITTSBURGH — When Darius Slay was listed as out for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals, it pointed to a chance for James Pierre to showcase what he could do.

Pierre, the sixth-year NFL veteran, was always known as the standout special teams gunner, but had impressed in his limited opportunities this season. Yet, covering Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins is another challenge altogether.

So, how did Pierre respond? He came out of nowhere to play the best game of his entire career, and may have solidified his spot in the starting lineup.

“Never lose belief in yourself,” Pierre said. “Everyday, it’s constant. Like, it’s a job to believe in yourself every day.”

Pierre’s journey is one of inspiration. He came in during the COVID draft class, where less than ten undrafted free agents made the active roster. He was one of those select few, and somehow stuck on the roster throughout his entire rookie contract.

Even when Pierre signed with the Washington Commanders after four seasons with the Steelers, he was released and brought back quickly. Another great year of special teams work in 2024 earned Pierre a one-year deal with the Steelers for 2025.

But he is now having a breakout year as a cornerback. In a limited sample size, Pierre has been the biggest surprise on the entire roster.

He had two passes defensed, including an impressive play over the top against Ja’Marr Chase in man coverage. Mike Tomlin has seen Pierre grow into moments like that one.

“He’s grown throughout the years,” Tomlin said. “He’s gotten better with each and every year he’s been here with his roles, and his ability to respond to opportunity and so forth. There’s a veteran high-level of consistency that we’re seeing right now.”

Pierre said he was thinking back to plays that he failed to make in previous years, and they ate at him. Now, he has a chance to rectify those wrongs.

He did that and more on Sunday. Going forward, Pierre has likely positioned himself in a potentially prominent role in the Steelers’ secondary.
