The play of first-year starter J.J. McCarthy at the quarterback position has been less than ideal for the team and those on the unit. The team has had some moments of brilliance, like the game against the Detroit Lions, but then the rest of the season has been rather forgettable for the offense as a whole.
The play of McCarthy is always under scrutiny, and the latest version of that comes from quarterback grades. Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski dropped his latest quarterback grades from Week 11 and McCarthy found himself with the lowest grade on the scale, an F.
Sobleski writes, “J.J. McCarthy is a mess mechanically. He’s a young quarterback in his first year as a starter and definitely looks like it at times. No consistency is being provided from the quarterback position with the 22-year-old at the helm. McCarthy has outright missed throws and made poor decisions. His footwork is all over the place, particularly when trying to play from the pocket. . .The frustration is obviously growing within the Vikings‘ offense. . .A team can feature wide receivers as talented as Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but they don’t matter if the quarterback can’t get them the ball on a regular basis.”
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for McCarthy either in the coming weeks.
His next three games come against the Green Bay Packers, Washington Commanders, and Seattle Seahawks. All three of those teams have formidable defenses to test McCarthy. And for better or worse, he needs to be winning arguably every single game in that stretch.
If he can do that, we may not see another F grade.
