The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday made a pair of tweaks to their practice squad.

Quarterback Adrian Martinez officially re-signed with the club after being waived Saturday to make room for defensive end Clelin Ferrell on the active roster. Martinez spent time on the active roster as Mac Jones’s backup QB while Brock Purdy missed time with a toe injury. Martinez became an expendable third QB when Purdy returned from his injury and moved Jones into his standard backup role.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday said the team was exploring the option of bringing Martinez back. His return was reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport a short while later.

Martinez gives San Francisco an internal depth option who is familiar with the offense, which could be valuable if Purdy gets hurt again at some point this season. The 2023 undrafted free agent made his NFL debut in the 49ers’ Week 9 win over the New York Giants where he took the field to kneel down on the final snap.

To make room for Martinez on the practice squad the 49ers released running back Sincere McCormick who’d been on the practice squad since late August. With so much RB depth on the active roster, a running back on the practice squad was an easily removable piece.

San Francisco is off Tuesday and Wednesday. They’ll resume their normal practice schedule a day later than normal on Thursday because of their Monday Night Football showdown with the Carolina Panthers.
