The Atlanta Falcons signed former Florida Gators quarterback Kyle Trask to their practice squad on Wednesday, according to an official update from the team.
The move comes after starting quarterback Micahel Penix went down with an ACL injury. Atlanta expects to be without him for the better part of the next year, thrusting Kirk Cousins back into the starting role. The Falcons signed Easton Stick to the active roster, opening the door for Trask.
The 2020 Heisman finalist spent three years in a backup role with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in seven games, completing four of 11 passes for 28 yards. Tampa used a second-round pick on Trask in 2021, hoping he would grow into a viable replacement for Tom Brady. Instead, Baker Mayfield signed with the Buccaneers and has been the starter ever since.
After Trask took first-team reps this summer, Tampa signed Teddy Bridgewater as the backup and waived the former Gator.
“We had Kyle for four years, and it was a good four-year run,” Tampa head coach Todd Bowles said. “We just feel like we’ve got a better chance with Teddy.”
Trask had workouts with the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals this season before signing with Atlanta.
