The Houston Texans have released former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Matthew Wright. Wright played in two games for the Texans, making four out of four kicks, with a long of 43. Starting kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn suffered a quad injury, but is expected to return.
He has also kicked in one game this season for the Titans a week ago, going 1 for 1 and perfect on extra points. A season ago, he kicked in five games across three different teams, including two games with the Titans.
Wright has stuck around the NFL for years as a mercenary kicker but is trying to find his long-term spot.
The 26 year old has been a journeyman kicker and that was his second stint with the Chiefs, his first coming in 2021. An undrafted kicker out of UCF, the Steelers have brought Wright in multiple times for training camp. He helped kicker Chris Boswell have a lighter workload last summer as the Steelers have changed how Boswell works to make sure his body is in great shape.
The Texans were not his long-term spot, either, and Wright has not found that landing spot just yet. Instead, he has earned his living kicking for multiple different teams when injuries pop up.
