“I’m super excited to get in here, fit in with the guys and try to make my way just like I did eight years ago.”
The Arizona Cardinals brought back a familiar face to the receiver room this week as they prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at State Farm Stadium in Week 12. They signed receiver Trent Sherfield to the practice squad.
Sherfield began his career with the Cardinals in 2018, making the team as a rookie free agent out of Vanderbilt, making an impact on special teams. He played three seasons in Arizona and is now in his eighth NFL season.
With Simi Fehoko, whose role was almost exclusively on special teams, landing on injured reserve, Sherfield seems to stand a good chance of being elevated to the active roster this week or in the weeks to come to play. There might be much acclimation to the Cardinals’ system, as Jeff Rodgers has been the team’s special teams coordinator since Sherfield’s rookie season.
For Sherfield, the return is tough to explain.
“I can’t really put it into words,” he told reporters on Thursday after practice. “I’m just soaking it in. It feels like home.”
It is extra familiar for another reason. “I’m literally right in my same locker.”
He finds himself once again in a role he knows well, having to compete to find a role and playing time.
“It’s a blessing. It really is,” he said. “I’m super excited to get in here, fit in with the guys and try to make my way just like I did eight years ago.”
We will see on Saturday if he is elevated to the active roster to play on Sunday.
