GLENDALE – Arizona Cardinals fans will have to wait just a little longer for their star running back to make it back on the field. Earlier this week, Arizona opened up the 21-day practice window for running back Trey Benson, who was on injury reserve after having arthroscopic surgery on his meniscus. There was a pipedream that Benson could possibly make his return this Sunday in the Cardinals Week 12 game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, the team announced that Benson will be out for Sunday’s game, leaving the offense in a tough position in the running back room.

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (33) breaks out of the backfield against the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, on Sept. 25, 2025.
Cardinals injury report for Sunday’s game vs. Jaguars:
Not only will Benson not see the field, but third-down back Emari Demercado will miss Week 12 with an ankle injury. The only healthy halfbacks on the roster will be Bam Knight and Michael Carter. The duo have carried the load plenty since Benson had been sidelined after Week 4. However, Demercado’s injury takes away a safety net for the offense, if Knight or Carter gets injured, the run game could be in trouble.

The Cardinals will need their 23-year-old back back soon, as the team has been one of the worst running attacks in the NFL since his injury. The rise of quarterback Jacoby Brissett has forced the offense to play towards its strength in the pass game, which has tossed the ground game to the side. Despite Benson not returning this week, his eventual return will shake up Arizona’s offense for the better, as it tries to turn itself around vs. Jacksonville.
