The Washington Commanders were in Madrid, Spain, to take on the Miami Dolphins in NFL Week 11.
It was the first game in Spain in NFL history, and the hope was that a five-game losing streak would be snapped for the Commanders. For the first time in a while, the defense actually played well. This was the first game since Dan Quinn took over playcalling duties for the unit, and the Dolphins were held to 16 points.
However, the offense couldn’t manage to do much of anything. The Marcus Mariota-led offense mustered just 13 points, and the Commanders fell 16-13 thanks to a field goal in overtime. It’s now six consecutive losses for the Commanders, and the team sits at 3-8.
Now, let’s identify the studs and duds from another disappointing loss.
Stud: Jordan Magee, LB
Last month, Joe Whitt mentioned that Jordan Magee would start playing a larger role on the defense. Well, the linebacker certainly made the most of his opportunities on Sunday.
Magee racked up five tackles against the Dolphins and was solid in pass coverage. The linebacker clearly looks faster and more agile than Bobby Wagner at this point, and should take over as the MIKE going forward. Too many players on the Commanders’ defense look slow or are just playing poorly, but Magee isn’t one of them.
Dud: Matt Gay, K
Matt Gay missed two field goals on Sunday, and when you end up losing by three, that obviously kills you.
Gay had a chance to win the game at the end of the fourth quarter, but he missed from 56 yards, and it wasn’t that close. The kicker also missed wide right from 51 yards in the second quarter. If either of those kicks goes in, the end result of this game is different. Gay is now just 13-of-19 on field goals this season.
Stud: Deebo Samuel, WR
Deebo Samuel made the most of his opportunities in Week 11. It’s not as easy to put up numbers with a backup quarterback, but Samuel was a reliable outlet for Mariota.
Samuel was targeted eight times and turned those targets into seven catches for 74 yards and one touchdown. Samuel also had one carry for three yards, and it was somewhat surprising not to see him involved even more.
Dud: Zach Ertz, TE
Zach Ertz has been a dud far too often in 2025. The veteran was expected to be a huge piece of the offense returning in 2025, but he’s largely disappointed.
In Madrid, Ertz was targeted eight times and turned those targets into just four catches for 42 yards. At least two of those targets were drops, and Ertz was also targeted in overtime on a throw that ended in an interception. The Commanders need more from one of their leaders on offense. Ertz also stumbled on a fourth-and-goal pass in the end zone, leading to a turnover on downs.
Dud: Mike Sainristil, CB
Let’s be honest — Mike Sainristil has been a liability often in 2025. The corner struggled again against the Dolphins, taking some odd routes on a couple of plays and failing to wrap up. He also dropped an interception
Then, late in the fourth, Sainristil muffed a punt, and the Dolphins regained possession. If Sainristil just secured the punt, the Commanders could’ve marched down and put the game away. Instead, the game went to overtime and the Dolphins won.
Dud: Chris Moore, WR
Like Ertz, Chris Moore has often found himself on the duds list this season. Also like Ertz, Moore is a veteran who should be more consistent than he has been.
On Sunday, Moore was targeted five times and came away with just two catches for 28 yards. Thanks to Moore’s struggles, it seemed like the only hope for the Commanders to move the ball was a Mariota run or a throw to Samuel. With Terry McLaurin continuing to be out, nobody other than Deebo is stepping up in the receiver room. Late in the game, Marcus Mariota hit him in the hands on a deep throw that would’ve won the game. Sure, it would have been a tough catch, but Moore should’ve caught it.
