The NFL’s decision to put the 49ers on “Monday Night Football” in Week 12 against the Carolina Panthers seemed a bit curious at the time.

Now, it all makes sense.

The Panthers were coming off 2-15 and 5-12 seasons. But they have been one of the surprises of the NFL season.

The 49ers (7-4) and Panthers (6-5) are in the thick of the NFC playoff picture, and the game on Monday at Levi’s Stadium is a biggie for both teams.

San Francisco is looking to string together back-to-back wins for the first time since Week 3, as it opened the season with three consecutive victories.

Here are five 49ers to watch in the prime-time showdown:

QB Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy showed no outward signs of rust upon his return to action after missing the previous six games due to a toe injury.

Purdy completed 19 of 26 passes for 200 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 41-22 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

He made it through the game healthy and went through a full week of practice to get ready for this game.

Purdy will be under the microscope in his first prime-time game since signing his $265 million contract in the offseason.

With the 49ers’ offense as healthy as it has been all season, the onus falls on Purdy to generate more points on a consistent basis to make up for the shortcomings of the defense.

K Matt Gay

Veteran kicker Matt Gay was not out of work for long.

Shortly after the Washington Commanders released Gay to sign Jake Moody, Gay was on a flight to the Bay Area. He won an audition against four others to become the fill-in for Eddy Piñeiro, who is out with a right hamstring injury.

Gay, 31, is a seven-year NFL veteran who has been very good from inside 50 yards but has struggled on the longer kicks. In his career, he is 146 of 158 (92.4 percent) on kicks of 49 yards or less, but just 32 of 54 (59.3 percent) at 50 and beyond.

The 49ers have played a lot of close games, and this could be another. Every point could be huge.

CB Deommodore Lenoir

The Panthers invested the No. 8 overall draft pick in wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. It has not taken him long to form a nice connection with quarterback Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft.

McMillan has 54 catches for 748 yards and four touchdowns. He will receive a lot of attention on the “Monday Night Football” broadcast.

Conversely, Deommodore Lenoir, who has two interceptions on the season, has a chance to show the nation that he is one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Opposing offenses have been reluctant to throw his way, so Lenoir is hoping for a busy night.

“I’m always up for the challenge,” he told NBC Sports Bay Area. “Every time I get my hopes (up), game day shows and it’s a totally different game plan for that team.”

LB Curtis Robinson

Curtis Robinson will start at middle linebacker in place of Tatum Bethune, who started in place of Fred Warner.

Robinson has been a member of the 49ers since late in the 2021 season. This will be his first starting assignment, though it should have happened last year.

The 49ers decided Robinson would be the starter in Week 4 of last season. But shortly after coach Kyle Shanahan informed Robinson, he sustained a torn ACL during a special-teams portion of practice.

“He was about to have his moment and then he had that setback, which I know crushed the team for him,” Shanahan said. “He is one of the most-liked guys on our team. He’s as good of a person, as good of a dude, as I’ve ever been around. And he’s worked for this moment and we’re excited to see him get his opportunity.”

This is a big assignment for Robinson, as he will face a challenge in Panthers running back Rico Dowdle, who averages 5.0 yards per carry while rushing for 833 yards and five touchdowns.

RB Christian McCaffrey

How can the Christian McCaffrey Revenge Game have more significance to McCaffrey when he feels as if he has something to prove every week?

“There’s always added motivation,” McCaffrey said this week. “I take every week extremely seriously.”

Of course, this is the first time McCaffrey will go against his former team after the 2022 mid-season trade brought him to the 49ers.

The Panthers received second-, third- and fourth-round picks in 2023 and a fifth-rounder in 2024 in exchange for McCaffrey.

McCaffrey has been the undisputed 49ers MVP this season. He leads the team with 707 yards rushing and 732 receiving yards.

His 3.7-yard rushing average is nearly a yard lower than his career average, so there still is room for improvement.
