For the first time since 2010, the Cincinnati Bengals play on Thanksgiving Day.
It’s been a long time coming, but for the Bengals, this game marks a chance for redemption – not only for this season – but for their Thanksgiving Day debut.
Ahead of the Bengals’ Turkey Day game, we’re taking a look back at the team’s first-ever Thanksgiving Day matchup, just in case you forgot what happened.
Bengals all-time Thanksgiving record
Unfortunately, the Bengals’ current all-time Thanksgiving Day record sits at 0-1. Their first and last Turkey Day game (until this year) occurred on Nov. 25, 2010.
Cincinnati played the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they fell to the Mark Sanchez-led team 26-10. The Jets’ victory boosted them to 9-2. Meanwhile, the matchup marked the Bengals’ eighth straight loss, putting them at 2-9.
Recapping the Bengals vs. Jets 2010 Thanksgiving matchup
At the end of the 2009-2010 season, the Cincinnati Bengals found themselves atop the AFC North, boasting a 10-6 record. The team was considered among the league’s best despite falling to the New York Jets in the first round of the playoffs.
The next season, the Bengals were slated to face off against the Jets on Thanksgiving Day. It was the first time Cincinnati had played on the holiday.
The Jets were the first on the board, clearing a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter, but the Bengals were the first to score a touchdown.
The touchdown drive also came in the second quarter with 0:54 seconds to go, according to ESPN. Then-Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer threw a short 5-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Jordan Shipley for the touchdown. With the Bengals up 7-3 at the half, things looked promising, but the Jets scored in the third quarter and kept the momentum.
In a 2010 article recapping the game, The San Diego Union-Tribune called the Bengals “one of the NFL’s worst teams,” stating that the Bengals “haven’t been the same since” the Jets beat them 37-0 in the 2009-10 season finale to earn a wild-card playoff berth.
The Jets faced off against the Bengals in Cincinnati in the first round of the playoffs the following week and won 24-14, allowing the Jets to advance to the AFC Championship game before falling to the Indianapolis Colts.
