Facing pressure like an NFL playoff game in Week 12, the Kansas City Chiefs scored 14 unanswered fourth-quarter points to claim a 23-20 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon, advancing to 6-5 and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Indianapolis opened its first drive at its own 25-yard line, beginning with quarterback Daniel Jones’ 6-yard throw to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. But running back Jonathan Taylor’s right-end run to midfield was negated by a holding call on guard Tanner Bortolini — and pushed the Colts back to their 39-yard line. On second-and-long, an illegal formation penalty wiped out a 19-yard gain. After a 12-yard completion to tight end Trey Warren, a false start forced a punt.

Chiefs’ first drive ends in disaster, Colts score

Kansas City opened its first drive at its own 4-yard line. After running back Kareem Hunt gained 3 yards, quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ short-left throw to wide receiver Rashee Rice was tipped at the line and intercepted by defensive end Laiatu Latu, who returned to the 3-yard line.

After defensive back Chamarri Conner stuffed Taylor for a 3-yard loss, Jones hit Pittman for a 6-yard touchdown, giving the Colts a 7-0 lead.

Chiefs answer with sustained field-goal drive

Kansas City opened its next possession series at its own 26 with 8:06 left in the quarter. Mahomes found Hunt for 11 yards and wide receiver Xavier Worthy for nine more. The Chiefs converted a third-and-3 at the Colts’ 45 after an incompletion to running back Brashard Smith. Kansas City gained another first down with runs by Hunt and Clyde Edwards-Helaire before Mahomes hit Smith for a 10-yard gain to put the Chiefs inside the red zone.

That ultimately led to a direct snap to tight end Travis Kelce that produced a 4-yard touchdown run, but it was erased by a face-mask penalty charged to right tackle Jawaan Taylor. That pushed Kansas City back to the 18-yard line just before the quarter ended.

After an Indianapolis penalty, Mahomes couldn’t complete a third-down throw, setting up placekicker Harrison Butker’s 28-yard field goal with 14:55 remaining. That narrowed the Colts’ lead to 7-3.

Colts stretch lead with explosive catch-and-run

On its next series, Indianapolis hit wide receiver Josh Downs for a short gain and went back to Taylor for a 5-yard run before Jones scrambled to convert at the 38-yard line. After an incompletion, Jones reached midfield with a throw to tight end Mo Alie-Cox.

But then Jones found wide receiver Ashton Dulin, who turned up the sideline for a 48-yard gain to Kansas City’s 5-yard line. Two plays later, Jones hit tight end Andrew Ogletree for a 4-yard touchdown that extended the Indianapolis lead to 14-3 with 10:25 left in the half.

Chiefs settle for 3 points after extended 13-play series

Starting at their own 22, the Chiefs worked their way down the field with a mixture of runs and passes, crossing midfield with a 7-yard pass to Edwards-Helaire followed is own 4-yard run. The Colts’ defensive lineman Greg Stewart was flagged for roughing the passer, wiping out an incompletion and moving the ball to the Indianapolis 30. Mahomes was sacked on consecutive 1-yard snaps, forcing Butker’s 48-yard field goal with 2:24 left in the half. That narrowed the score to 14-6.

Chiefs take late-half points but stall at the goal line

After forcing the Colts into a three-and-out, Kansas City started at its own 15-yard line with 1:41 left in the half. Hunt ran for 18 yards and Mahomes hit Kelce for 14 to reach midfield — and then after a false-start penalty, he found Gray for 17 yards. A face-mask penalty on defensive back Caelen Ward bumped the ball to the Indianapolis 24. Another roughing-the-passer flag moved the Chiefs into the red zone, but they were unable to work their way across the goal line. With 10 seconds left in the half, Butker cut the Colts’ lead to 14-9 with a 22-yard field goal.

Colts add to lead with two field goals

With a chance to “double up” to take the lead, Kansas City went three-and-out to open the second half.

Starting with good field position at their own 37, Indianapolis crossed midfield with a 12-yard pass to Warren. Then Jones took a shot down the right sideline, connecting with wide receiver Alec Pierce for 26 to reach the red zone. But there, the Kansas City defense stiffened, forcing Michael Badgley’s 32-yard field that gave the Colts a 17-9 lead.

Once again, however, Kansas City couldn’t score. Starting at the 20, its six-play drive sputtered short of midfield.

After a punt, Indianapolis got rolling from its own 26, getting 27 yards from a Taylor run to get inside the Chiefs’ 40. Jones scrambled 13 yards and then found Warren for 16 more, putting the Colts inside the 10. Jones missed a throw to Pierce and had a pass to Pittman broken up inside — but an offensive pass interference call on Pittman ended the drive. Badgley’s 23-yard field goal opened the Colts’ lead to 20-9 with 1:29 left in the quarter.

The Chiefs waste a big play with a fumble

Taking over at its 28-yard line, Kansas City quickly moved downfield with an 11-yard pass to Worthy and a 42-yard reception by Rice to get into the red zone. After an incompletion, Hunt ran to the 10-yard line — where linebacker Zaire Franklin punched the ball loose and cornerback Caelen Ward recovered.

Chiefs punch in touchdown, add two to close the gap

The Chiefs’ defense set the tone on the Colts’ next drive, with linebackers Drue Tranquill and Nick Bolton dropping Taylor in the backfield on the opening play. Jones then missed consecutive throws to Downs, forcing a punt that gave Kansas City the ball at its own 44-yard line.

Mahomes crossed midfield with an 8-yard pass to Kelce. Two plays later, he hit Smith for 22 yards — but an illegal blindside block penalty pushed the ball back to the Colts’ 45. Mahomes scrambled for 13 yards, went back to Brown for 10 more. The Chiefs reached the red zone after a short throw to Edwards-Helaire was extended by a facemask penalty on cornerback Amani Gardner. After Mahomes scrambled to the 2-yard line, Hunt powered in for Kansas City’s first touchdown — and Mahomes hit Rice on a two-point conversion to cut the Indianapolis lead to 20-17.

Chiefs force tie with last-second field goal

After three consecutive three-and-outs — two forced by their own defense — the Chiefs got the ball at their own 6-yard line with 4:43 left in regulation. After an offensive pass interference flag on Kelce pushed the ball back to the 3, Mahomes connected on a short throw that Rice turned into a 47-yard gain. After another 19-yard completion to Rice, Kansas City shifted into low gear, sticking with runs and short passes to drain the clock. A sack at the 7-yard line ended the Chiefs’ chance to win with a touchdown, but Butker had no trouble with a 25-yard field goal that tied the game at 20-20 as the clock hit zero.

Chiefs march 81 yards, win on field goal

The extra period began with the Kansas City defense forcing its fourth straight three-and-out, getting the ball back to the offense at its own 10-yard line.

The Chiefs took their time, running the ball to reach the 24-yard line. Then on third-and-7, Mahomes hit Worthy for a 31-yard gain to cross midfield. Then he found Rice for a for 21-yard completion that put Kansas City well inside field goal range. Hunt carried the ball another 10 yards to make it a chip shot — and then Butker ended the game with a 27-yard kick that sealed the Chiefs’ 23-20 win.
