ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) – Permian, Greenwood and Rankin all made it to the third round of the Texas High School Football Playoffs.
The Permian Basin hasn’t seen a football state title in five years. Success from any of these programs is celebrated throughout the area.
“I think all the Permian Basin teams root for each other. It doesn’t matter the classification or the district,” said Greenwood Head Football Coach Bryan Hill. “Ultimately, I think it’s good for the area. It’s kind of the birthplace of Friday night lights and so to see Permian Basin squads play three and four rounds and longer into the playoffs, it’s exciting for all of West Texas.”
The Panthers are making their first Class 6A – Division I Regional Semifinals appearance since 2014. They face the Allen Eagles on Nov. 28 in Abilene.
Permian quarterback Jakob Garcia will make his second straight start in the third round. Garcia returned to the field on Nov. 21 after missing three weeks with a leg injury.
“From here on out, as we’ve seen, you’re getting the best of the best,” said Permian Head Football Coach Jeff Ellison. “If you want to be the best, you’ve got to be the best.”
Greenwood is the last school standing from Midland. The Rangers are undefeated in 2025, including two playoff wins over Perryton and Eagle Mountain.
All the remaining teams in the Class 4A – Division II postseason have eight or more wins and big moments on their resume.
“At this point in the playoffs, everybody is good. Every team is good and every team is going to pose a lot of challenges for us,” said Hill. “I think the key is going to be continuing to play complimentary football. If the defense gets a stop, the offense has to go score. Special teams needs to put points on the board or keep points off the board depending on the unit.”
Greenwood will play Whiteface in Sweetwater on Nov. 28.
The only Permian Basin team left not from Midland-Odessa is Rankin. The Red Devils are in the six-man postseason for the eighth straight year under Head Coach Garret Avalos.
Despite their November track record, Rankin has never made a state title game. A trip to AT&T Stadium is on the hearts and minds of the Red Devil faithful.
“It’s good for the community and our kids,” said Avalos. “We knew we had a shot to win a few playoff games this year is everything fell into place so it’s just kind of been nice to see that happen for them.”
Rankin will take on Whiteface in Lamesa on Nov. 28.
