The Las Vegas Raiders fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly following Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns, and things were reportedly worse than just a poor record.
“There are all kinds of different stories about just the dysfunction of the Raiders offense,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on The Rich Eisen Show (3:50 mark). “There were times I was told where Chip Kelly was repeatedly botching the play calls. … So Geno Smith was going to the line of scrimmage and saying, ‘This doesn’t look right.’ And they’re having to run a play.”
Pelissero also noted Kelly sometimes called plays that weren’t in the game plan or installed in advance.
It was reasonable to have fairly high expectations for the Raiders entering the season.
They brought in head coach Pete Carroll and his resume that includes a Super Bowl title, added Kelly after he helped lead Ohio State to a College Football Playoff title and signed quarterback Geno Smith after he was a Pro Bowler in 2022 and 2023.
They also drafted running back Ashton Jeanty in the first round to add him to an offense that already featured star tight end Brock Bowers.
However, things have gone anything but according to plan.
Las Vegas is 2-9 on the campaign and has lost five games in a row. The offense is 30th in the league in yards per game and 31st in points per game, while Smith leads the league with 13 interceptions.
Pelissero’s report indicates Kelly and Smith were not an ideal fit, which could explain some of the quarterback’s regression after he played so well for the Seattle Seahawks for multiple seasons.
As for Kelly, he may eventually return to the college game.
He found more success at that level as a champion with the Buckeyes as an offensive coordinator and the head coach at Oregon from 2009 through 2012. He went 46-7 with the Ducks, although he was unable to replicate that as the head coach of UCLA when he went 35-34 from 2018 through 2023.
Kelly was also the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-15 and went 26-21 before he went 2-14 as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.
His latest venture into the NFL didn’t work well, and the Raiders decided to move on before the season ended.
