Jim Gaffigan is calling a personal foul on how most perceive a controversy that shook the National Football League.

The comedian appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Monday, and during his interview, he decided to tackle former NFL coach Bill Belichick’s romantic relationship with Jordon Hudson.

Gaffigan’s defense of the 73-year-old North Carolina Tar Heels coach dating a 24-year-old woman began after Kimmel called the comedian out for misusing an idiom.

“What is this NPR?” Gaffigan cracked after Kimmel corrected him. “In case you didn’t know, I’m a dumb guy.”

After making this admission, Gaffigan seemed to have a sudden epiphany, pivoting to ask Kimmel, “Do you admit that you’re a dumb man?”

“Um, I don’t know. I don’t think of myself as dumb,” Kimmel responded. “I do dumb things.”

“This will get cut out in the edit,” Gaffigan said before launching into his rant.

“Let me talk hypothetically. Here’s how dumb men are. …I’m going to think of a hypothetical man,” he began.

To really drive his point, Gaffigan outlined that his “hypothetical man” needed to have stereotypical traits indicative of his gender, such as working in a “male-dominated occupation.”

“Let’s say a football coach. OK? Uh, let’s say an NFL coach.” Gaffigan decided. “Let’s say this football coach has won five Super Bowls.”

Thanks to Gaffigan’s very specific “hypotheticals,” Kimmel started giggling because Gaffigan was clearly referring to Belichick. The NFL legend is considered one of the best coaches in football history, having led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl wins (Gaffigan missed one). Belichick also helped the New York Giants win two Super Bowls as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Despite breaking for a split second by cracking a small grin after Kimmel got whom he was referring to, Gaffigan plowed on.

“And let’s say he had this legacy. And let’s say this brilliant mastermind had his legacy destroyed by a 24-year-old social media manager,” Gaffigan said, referring to Hudson.

“Ok, this is all hypothetical,” Kimmel joked.

“Hypothetically speaking!” Gaffigan responded.

“Now, maybe they’re in love,” Gaffigan continued, causing Kimmel to crack up. “He’s 73. She’s 24. Now, I know some people have an issue with that — and those people are called women.”

“But, you know, guys hear that age and they’re like, ‘You know, hey, love is love,’ right?” Gaffigan continued. “My point is, she’s not evil. He’s dumb.”

“Yeah, it could be both,” Kimmel said.

Kimmel’s remark echoes concerns by sports fans regarding Hudson’s behavior. In April, the former beauty queen abruptly shut down an interview question about how she and Belichick met while Belichick was being interviewed by “CBS Sunday Morning.” What made this move unusual is that Hudson did it while sitting off-camera.

Belichick’s daughter-in-law, Jennifer Schmitt, has also been publicly critical of Hudson’s behavior.
