Four turnovers by Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence weren’t enough for the Arizona Cardinals to snap a losing streak in overtime in Week 12.
A Chad Ryland field goal in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter gave Arizona a chance to win it in overtime. Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett‘s deep shot for Xavier Weaver on 4th and 4 fell incomplete and the Jaguars escaped State Farm Stadium with a 27-24 win.
Arizona managed just 55 yards on the ground in the loss – their second-lowest single-game total of the year.
They had their worst game on the ground a week earlier against the San Francisco 49ers. Arizona managed just 36 rushing yards in the blowout loss to San Francisco at home.
The team’s missed multiple running backs this season. Starter James Conner suffered a season-ending foot injury and his backup Trey Benson suffered a knee injury a week later and went to injured reserve (IR).
Zonovan “Bam” Knight led the way in their absence as the Cardinals have lost six of seven games without either Benson or Conner. But how long will he keep doing that? Here’s the latest on when Benson could return after his time on IR:
When will Trey Benson return?
Arizona activated Benson from IR on Nov. 19. That began his practice window – the 21 days the coaching staff has to decide on moving him to the active roster. If he does not do that within that window, he’ll be back on IR for the rest of the season.
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon did not have an update on Benson’s status today but the second-year running back was participating in drills during practice.
Today marks the start of the second week of Benson’s practice window, and Gannon is set to speak to the media again on Friday and could provide a clearer update then.
The Cardinals will have until Dec. 9 to decide whether to move him to the active roster. He may miss this week’s game on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with a more likely return set for Week 14 at home against NFC West foe Los Angeles.

Knight looks poised to get the start again this week against Tampa Bay with Benson still limited in practice. Demercado’s still recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered against the 49ers in Week 11 and is questionable for the Buccaneers game.
Carter and Jefferson are depth options in the case Demercado’s unable to play in Week 13 and McCormick’s an add to the practice squad in case of more injury.
