Oklahoma’s mission is clear as it closes out the NCAA regular season at home to LSU on Saturday, with a place in the College Football Playoff riding on the line. The No. 8 Sooners can even lock down home-field advantage in the first round should they come out on top, while anything but the win would assuredly knock them out of contention.
John Mateer has successfully steered the Sooners through a hailstorm of talented opposition to put his side on the brink of a first CFP berth since December 2019. As fate would have it, that game resulted in a Peach Bowl semi-final against none other than LSU, who won 63-28 before going on to be crowned national champion.
This year’s Tigers may not be the same star vehicle as that roster of six years ago, but Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables is by no means taking the task lightly. The November slate has included rousing wins over ranked opponents in Tennessee, Alabama, and Missouri, but those victories have come by a combined margin of just 19 points, 11 of which came against the latter outfit.
Oklahoma will look to seal successive scalps against the Tigers as LSU comes to town, hunting a first win over Louisiana since the 35-0 Sugar Bowl blowout of 1950.
