The Kansas City Chiefs’ hype only lasted four days, following their 23-20 overtime win over Daniel Jones and the Indianapolis Colts. The defending AFC champions traveled to Dallas to take on the Cowboys, fresh off a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Patrick Mahomes and Co. had a fast start, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. They had to wait until the final period to find the end zone again, while the Cowboys scored in each of the fourth quarters, securing a 31-28 win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
After dropping to 6-5, many are counting out the Chiefs, including their former quarterback, Alex Smith. The analyst said it is time for Kansas City to panic.
“The Chiefs… It’s major panic time,” Smith said. “Patrick said it, they can beat anybody, they can lose to anybody as well. They gotta win out, right? They play the Texans this week, the best defense in the NFL. Their margin of error is so small.
“This defense can not get off the field on third down. It used to be elite. Chris Jones, obviously, a game changer. They’re 29th in the NFL this year on third down. And since Week 8, they’re dead last on third down as a defense.”
The Cowboys’ offense capitalized on those third-down struggles, converting nine of 16 opportunities. They racked up 457 yards, nearly 100 more than the Chiefs (362) and recorded one more yard per play than their opponents (7.0 to 6.0).
It is time to wake up for Kansas City. They will face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15, before visiting the Tennessee Titans in Week 16. They will clash against the Denver Broncos on Christmas before closing out the season against the Las Vegas Raiders.
