The Seattle Seahawks waived former UW Huskies star running back Myles Gaskin and signed outside linebacker Ja’Markis Weston to their practice squad on Tuesday.
Seattle also released wide receiver Brenden Rice – the son of NFL all-time leading receiver and former Seahawk Jerry Rice – and center Doug Kramer Jr. from the practice squad.
Where Seahawks stand in latest NFL power rankings
Gaskin, a Lynnwood native and alumnus of Seattle’s O’Dea High School, was signed from the practice squad to the 53-man roster last week. He made his Seahawks debut in Sunday’s win over the Vikings, rushing three times for six yards while serving as the No. 3 running back.
If Gaskin clears waivers, he’s a candidate to fill the open spot Seattle now has on its practice squad. The 28 year old has been cut and re-signed by the Seahawks twice already this season.
Gaskin is UW’s all-time career rushing leader.
Weston, an undrafted rookie out of Florida, made two tackles while appearing in three games this season with the New York Jets. All 56 of his snaps played were on special teams, per Pro Football Reference. The 25-year-old Weston began this year on injured reserve with a groin injury and made pro debut Oct. 19.
Weston, who measures in at 6 foot 2 and 235 pounds, proved to be extremely versatile while spending six seasons at Florida. He started his career as a wide receiver and made the move to safety during his fourth season. In his final college campaign, he played defensive end.
Rice was signed to Seattle’s practice squad on Nov. 18 and did not appear in a game. Kramer was signed to practice squad Nov. 20 and also did not appear in a game.
