What’s the latest on Justin Herbert?

Quarterback Justin Herbert was limited in practice on Thursday as he recovers from surgery to stabilize a fracture in his left (non-throwing) hand that took place on Monday. Herbert suffered the injury during the first quarter of Sunday’s win over the Raiders. He exited the game for eight plays, but returned after the hand was placed in a cast with a glove over it. The Chargers protected Herbert by only running plays for him out of the shotgun and pistol formations.

Trey Lance replaced Herbert for the brief period on Sunday. He is taking the first-team reps in Herbert’s absence.

Despite the limited designation on Thursday, the Chargers have expressed optimism that Herbert will play Monday night against the Eagles.

“Yeah, that’s the plan. To prepare as if I’m going to play,” Herbert said on Wednesday, according to Chargers.com. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman have expressed similar sentiments in press conferences this week.

It remains to be seen whether rookie first-round pick Omarion Hampton will return to action against the Eagles. Hampton was a limited participant on Thursday. Reports indicate he was wearing a non-contact jersey at practice. Hampton was placed on Injured Reserve on October 8 after fracturing his left ankle against the Washington Commanders. His 21-day practice window opened on November 25. Hampton has 314 rushing yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, this season. He also has 20 catches for 136 yards through the air.

Wide receiver Quentin Johnston was limited with a shoulder injury. He was seen at practice with a non-contact jersey. He leads the Chargers with seven touchdown receptions this season.
