The star-powered Philadelphia Eagles have not looked like themselves on offense all season long. The tailspin has only been worse since their bye week, as three-and-outs have become more common than scoring drives. The passing game has been uneven, and the offense can’t buy an explosive run right now despite having the reigning Offensive Player of the Year at running back in Saquon Barkley. Nothing is working for them.
So, let’s dive into why an offense with so many star players can’t move the ball.
Barkley is producing at half the clip he was last year — the Eagles have struggled to generate rushing lanes to spring Barkley free due to injuries to key players on the offensive line, and the addition of a new offensive coordinator in Kevin Patullo hasn’t helped, either.
The Eagles offense doesn’t have the juice it had last year. I know they had some missteps in the passing game, but they were able to lean on the best rushing attack in football then. They can’t do that right now.
Maybe when the offensive line gets healthier, some of this gets fixed. Right tackle Lane Johnson is the most important offensive lineman in the league, and you feel his absence. There’s also a chance AJ Brown gets more snaps from the slot, or we see more motion and movement from the passing game.
But until we actually see those changes, it’s hard to feel like this version of Philadelphia’s offense has what it takes to make a run at defending its title.
