Derek Warehime, who has college coaching experience at one of the sport’s premier brands, is set to move on his career after most recently being on Tim Beck’s Coastal Carolina staff.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Warehime is expected to be the next offensive line coach for Major Applewhite at the University of South Alabama.

Moreover, the two share a strong connection: they both have deep ties to the University of Texas, where Applewhite was a star quarterback.

Warehime was on the University of Texas staff from 2017-19.

Additionally, Warehime was previously on staff at the University of New Mexico. He coached with Beck and former top Longhorn Tom Herman at both Texas and, prior to that stint, the University of Houston.

Applewhite is retooling his South Alabama staff on the heels of a disappointing 4-8 2025 campaign. He made multiple staff changes on that side of the ball last week.

In Warehime, Applewhite is moving to a more veteran presence at arguably the second-most important position on the offensive side of the ball: the line.

Aside from coaching experience, Warehime also brings tremendous experience from playing along the offensive line. He’s a former standout-player for Tulsa University.

There, Warehime was a star center for the Golden Hurricane who earned All-Western Athletic Conference honors and briefly enjoyed a professional playing career before transitioning into coaching.

South Alabama, which absorbed a six-game losing streak in the middle of the 2025 season, is scheduled to open its 2026 season Sept. 5, 2026, against Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program Southeastern Louisiana.
