Former Louisville center Michael Gonzalez has signed with the Atlanta Falcons

This interests me since Ryan Neuzil, who the Falcons have basically penciled in as their starting center this year, still hasn’t officially re-signed with the team. https://t.co/eWdgMV6dDF

The Atlanta Falcons have signed center Michael Gonzalez and released offensive lineman Joey Fisher in a corresponding move, the team announced on Friday afternoon. Gonzalez, an undrafted free agent out of Louisville, has a chance to get some playing time since the team has not re-signed veteran Ryan Neuzil.

The Falcons invited Gonzalez to their rookie minicamp, and now he joins the roster while they wait on Neuzil to sign. So what is the team getting in the former Cardinals offensive lineman?

“Gonzalez put together his best season at the collegiate level as a senior,” wrote SI’s Matthew McGavic. “Starting all 13 games at left guard, the 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman allowed no sacks and just 17 total pressures across 457 pass block snaps and 815 blocking snaps overall.”

Atlanta has placed a right-of-refusal tender on Neuzil, but he has yet to sign it. The Falcons expect Neuzil to start at center this season despite the fact that he’s not currently on the roster. Head coach Raheem Morris said as much at the NFL owners meetings.

“Definitely feel confident with Neuzil,” Morris said. “Definitely after getting the sample size that we got a chance to look at when Dalman was out.”

In the NFL, sometimes the best ability is availability. Neuzil’s absence gives Gonzalez a chance to make an impression on the coaching staff and potentially make the team’s 53-man roster.
